Yudhra Movie Review: Siddhant Chaturvedi’s Action Thriller Stumbles with a Predictable Plot and Lackluster Climax in the Second Half

Yudhra Movie Review: The story of Yudhra (Siddhant Chaturvedi) begins with a tragic backdrop. His father, a tough cop, dismantles a dangerous drug operation run by mafia kingpin Firoze (Raj Arjun). In a brutal act of revenge, Firoze kills Yudhra’s father and his pregnant mother. Miraculously, the infant Yudhra survives. From a young age, Yudhra develops an aggressive and violent personality, which is nurtured by his adoptive father Kartik (Gajraj Rao), a close friend of his late father. Yudhra is also mentored by Rehman (Ram Kapoor), another colleague of his father. His only emotional anchor is Nikhat (Malavika Mohanan), his love interest, who stands by him despite the strain his anger puts on their relationship. After being expelled from both school and the National Counter Terrorism Academy (NCTA), Yudhra lands in a dangerous prison. To channel his aggression, he is given a mission to infiltrate Firoze’s drug cartel and gather information, avenging his father’s death in the process. While the first half of the film, penned by Farhan Akhtar, holds promise with its intense narrative, the second half loses steam as the plot becomes predictable and the climax underwhelming.

Yudhra Movie Review: Script Analysis

Director Ravi Udyawar builds a strong foundation in the first half, focusing on Yudhra’s inner turmoil and his need to confront his past. The concept of a troubled young man battling his inner demons through violence and revenge keeps the audience hooked initially. However, the film falters in the second half as the plot becomes increasingly predictable. The much-anticipated final confrontation between Yudhra and Firoze lacks the intensity needed to leave a lasting impact. A key twist in the storyline becomes obvious long before it’s revealed, and Yudhra’s transformation, especially in relation to his experiences in the brutal Deccan Jail, is inadequately explored. What could have been a gripping tale of survival and retribution ends up feeling formulaic and devoid of emotional depth.

Yudhra Movie Review: Star Performances

Siddhant Chaturvedi shoulders the film with his performance, especially in the action sequences where he excels. He portrays the physicality of Yudhra convincingly, but his emotional scenes, particularly in the latter half, fall flat. Despite this, Chaturvedi’s commitment to the role is evident, and he does justice to the intense, brooding persona required. Malavika Mohanan is not limited to a mere love interest role, playing a key part in the narrative with conviction. Raghav Juyal shines in his role, bringing intensity to his performance, but his character is unfortunately underutilized in the second half. Gajraj Rao and Ram Kapoor perform their roles efficiently, while Shilpa Shukla, despite her strong acting chops, is wasted in a minor role. A standout performance comes from the child actor playing young Rudra, who leaves a strong impression.

Yudhra Movie Review: Direction and Music

Ravi Udyawar attempts to revive the spirit of old-school revenge dramas from the 70s and 80s, with a hero seeking justice against overwhelming odds. While the first half captures the essence of a gritty revenge saga, the second half loses focus, making the film feel disjointed. Jay Oza’s cinematography is a highlight, using the color red to symbolize Yudhra’s simmering rage and desire for vengeance. There are moments where the visual style takes inspiration from comic books and anime, adding flair to the action sequences. The stunt choreography is sleek and well-executed, but the film’s music largely fails to make an impact, with only the romantic track “Saathiya” standing out.

Siddhant Chaturvedi puts in a commendable effort in his first leading role, especially in the action-packed sequences. However, due to weak execution in the second half, Yudhra doesn’t fully utilize his potential or deliver the gripping experience it promises. While it may appeal to die-hard action fans, the film ultimately misses the mark, making it a one-time watch at best.
